Montessori School Spring Lake, NJ
Monmouth Montessori Academy near Spring Lake is an AMS-member Montessori school set on a spacious campus with a playground and pool. The 19th-century schoolhouse has been completely renovated to accommodate bright, air-conditioned classrooms for preschool (Age 3 to 6) and elementary (age 6-9) students. It is an environment rich in joy and beautiful simplicity.
Choosing a Montessori education is a decision to cultivate academic excellence as well as emotional intelligence. Instead of using rote memorization and one-size-fits-all lesson plans, the Montessori Method features multi-age classrooms where students are free to choose their own work and explore the world at their own pace. There are no exams or grades to signal “the end” of learning but rather encouragement of an internally-motivated quest for knowledge that continues indefinitely. Contrary to the idea that Montessori schools have “no structure”, the classroom is structured so that students can spend their time as they choose within the boundaries of the educational environment. The classroom is broken down into five areas of study: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Geography and Cultural Studies. Everybody is not doing the same thing at the same time, but with expert teachers to guide them, students are allowed to work in their field of interest. At Monmouth Montessori at Spring Lake, we find it doesn’t take much convincing for a child to find a passion and follow it through.
Dr. Maria Montessori also stressed the importance of developing social skills with academic ones. Montessori adherents trust that allowing children to decide how they use their time in the classroom teaches self-discipline out of the classroom. Through hands-on activities, students develop gross and fine motor skills while they extend their attention span. They also learn independent living skills such as cleaning up after themselves and preparing food. Students are expected to use grace, courtesy and respect at all times. There are no raised voices, but rather a cordial quiet workspace where please and thank you and the norm.
